Like, let’s try this: WHY THE FUCK DOES ANYBODY NEED TO BE TOLD RAPE JOKES AREN’T FUNNY is kind of like WHY THE FUCK DOES ANYBODY NEED TO BE TOLD GIGGLING ABOUT LYNCHING IS JUVENILE AND CRUEL. Or, here’s another: laughing at/telling rape jokes is a pretty clear indicator of how little you can personally identify with the very real consequences of a very real act, just like laughing at/telling lynching jokes is a pretty clear indicator that you’re so so so white, and have never known and will never know somebody who was lynched (though you might know somebody who did the lynching).
This is long but FUCKING WORTH READING. I could cry for days and still not be over it. It isn’t about me getting over anything and I’m GLAD I won’t just move past it. I don’t think I can ever separate myself from this again. I acknowledge all the privilege I have — my whiteness and my being male. I want to work against it in every possible way I can. I will work against it. Dismantling, unpacking, all of those things. In every single move I make, I will see my privilege and I will learn more and more about what it means and what it is ruining.
Just fucking read this and step back and listen to it.
I’m just gonna reblog this because, apparently, people still don’t get the idea that rape isn’t the subject of ridicule or joke or that rape isn’t cute or something you wish upon yourself or other people. EVER.
It’s bad enough to say that rape is funny, but PLEASE don’t go so far as to say that you wish someone would rape you because you think it would be enjoyable and sexy and amazing. That’s just inconsiderate to those who have actually experienced instances of sexual violence and makes their trauma seem like something that’s enjoyable and fun which it is NOT.
Seriously, just read this article to educate yourself on the subject of rape culture because this is something that people need to get into their minds. No, seriously, READ THIS ARTICLE.
